April Fox spent years training professionally in ballet, modern, and contemporary dance before finding in yoga something she didn't expect: a path back to her body on her own terms. She's been teaching since 2014 and today has a devoted community built around Doom Metal Yoga — yes, that's a real thing, yes, it's yoga with doom metal music, and yes, people are obsessed.
Her offerings extend well beyond the doom: Goth Ballet, heading Portland Dance Collective as a community resource, and wildly popular open yoga classes at Portland's major studios, where her eclectic playlists — Bowie, Nick Cave, deep cuts from the 80s and 90s alternative underground — have become a community gathering point in their own right. Her teaching is rooted in serious training with teachers including Theresa May, Audra Carmine, and Jules Febre, and she has no interest in fitting neatly into anyone's idea of what a yoga class (or life) should be. Come for the tunes. Stay for everything else.
